Responsible Gaming
Real-money gaming takes more money from players in aggregate than it returns. That is not a warning about misuse, it is the arithmetic the business runs on. Everything below assumes you already know that and want to keep the damage bounded.
Decide the number before you open the app
The single most effective habit is also the least exciting one: choose what you are prepared to lose in a month, in advance, away from the app, and treat it as spent the moment you deposit it. Not a target, not a float, not something you expect back. If that number is uncomfortable to write down, it is too big.
Limits that hold
- A separate payment method with a fixed balance. Far more reliable than willpower, because it stops you rather than asking you to stop.
- A time limit as well as a money limit. Long sessions cost more than loose limits do.
- No deposits after a loss. The deposit made immediately after losing is the one that turns a bad evening into a bad month.
- No playing tired, drunk, or to feel better. All three remove exactly the judgement the games are priced against.
- No borrowed money. Ever. Not from a card, an app, a friend or a salary advance.
Warning signs
Any one of these on its own is worth taking seriously. Several together means stop now, not soon.
- Playing longer or for more than you decided, repeatedly.
- Going back to win losses back. This is the defining sign, and it is the one everyone rationalises.
- Hiding how much you play, or lying about it when asked.
- Borrowing, selling things, or dipping into money meant for something else.
- Sleep, work, study or relationships slipping because of it.
- Feeling anxious, irritable or flat when you cannot play.
Getting help in India
Gambling problems are treated as a behavioural addiction, and they respond to the same support as other addictions.
- Tele-MANAS, the Government of India's mental health helpline: 14416, free, 24 hours, many languages.
- NIMHANS in Bengaluru runs a service for behavioural addictions, including gambling, and accepts self-referrals.
- Gamblers Anonymous has meetings in several Indian cities and online, at no cost.
- A GP or a counsellor. An ordinary doctor is a legitimate first step and can refer onward.
Tell one person you trust as well. Concealment is what lets this grow, and saying it out loud once is most of the work.
Blocking it properly
Uninstalling the app is a speed bump, not a block. What actually works is stacking obstacles: uninstall it, delete the download, block gambling categories at your bank or UPI app where that option exists, install a blocker that covers the app and the sites, and hand the password for that blocker to somebody else. Any single measure gets undone in a weak moment; four of them, with another person holding one, usually do not.
Under 18
These apps are for adults only, and there is no argument on the other side of that. If you are under 18, close this page.
Where you live matters
Real-money gaming is regulated state by state in India and is prohibited outright in several. Whether you may legally play is your responsibility to establish, and nothing on this site is legal advice.
